Accessing and Using the Maps

If this is your first visit to the site, please take the time to scroll down this page and read about the site, data and technologies used to bring this site to you. To access the map, please click on below map image link.

Navigating the map is straight-forward. Use the zoom in tool by single clicking on the map to zoom in by a factor of two, or click and drag a window to zoom to. You can also zoom out and pan the map. The layer legend is displayed on the left side. You can turn on and off layers by selecting one or more (use the control or shift buttons to select multiple layers in the list), or turn on and off entire layer groups.

Note that layers are not always available on the map at all times. They have been authored to only be available at certain map scales so as to be optimized and to not cause too large of a data request. For instance, Spokane County parcel polygons are only available at a scale of 1:10,000 and below. This site works best with a broadband connection given the amount of information that might be streamed for any given map request. Be particularly careful of using the imagery layers, they cause large amounts of information to be passed to the client every time you zoom or pan.

This site works best with Internet Explorer. If you use IE, the first time you access the map below, a 1.3 MB ActiveX control will automatically download and prompt you for installation. If you use any other browser, a Java viewer will download each time you access the page and this version has reduced functionality compared to the Internet Explorer version. For instance, the Searching and Zooming To capabilities are not enabled.

New Features

  • Updated Spokane County parcel data. The parcel polygons and parcel searching data is now more current as of August 2005.
  • Added a link to Google Maps. Center your view near your point of interest and press the new Google button on the toolbar. A new Google Maps window of that area will open and you can then get directions to or from this location.
  • Added Zoning layer for the City of Spokane. These are non-colored layers. Float your mouse over the zoning polygon for a description or turn on the additional Zoning Labels layer to see it on the map.

About the Map Data

This site contains data obtained from a variety of sources and displays it on one map. The publicly available information includes:

  • National Shape file data from the US Census Bureau (TIGER data) for state boundaries, cities, County boundaries, major roads, etc.
  • County Shape file data from Spokane County. This includes County roads, water bodies, schools, townships, sections, etc. Also included are parcels as of May 2004. Ownership information is not available to protect the privacy of individuals. Only parcel number, address and size are displayed.
  • City of Spokane Shape file data. This includes City roads, parks, bridges and tunnels, curbs and driveways, buildings, etc.
  • 2003 NAIP (National Agricultural Imagery Program) imagery. This is 2 meter/pixel resolution color aerial photography available to the public. This imagery was obtained from Spokane County and you can browse and download all of images, including georeferencing information, from our FTP site at ftp.SpokaneMaps.com. The coordinate system is Washington State Plane, NAD83 datum, North zone, feet.

About the Internet Map Server Technology

Our map server runs Autodesk MapGuide Server software. MapGuide provides the means to retrieve information from a variety of datasources and assemble them into the requested map view which is then streamed back to the client. It can read many different types of spatial data directly; with NO CONVERSION necessary. This includes ESRI Shape files, AutoCAD DWG's and Oracle Spatial. Coordinate system transformation, if necessary, is done on the fly. Additionally, any ODBC compliant database can be attached to spatial layers for dynamic "tooltip" popup information or labels. Point and text layers can be driven directly from a database if the X and Y coordinate information is also stored. All common georeferenced raster image sources can also be read directly including TIF, MrSID, and ECW.

There are four different ways to view MapGuide driven information depending on the internet browser you use. For Internet Explorer, there is an ActiveX control, for Netscape a Plug-in and for any browser that supports Java, a Java edition. Additionally, MapGuide LiteView can be utilized to generate PNG images of the map request through a servlet application, similar to what you'd see on a site like MapQuest.
